More batteries are ruined by improper charging than by over-use. The safest, most efficient way to charge batteries without making them too hot or boiling off electrolyte is in three distinct stages:
The first stage, Bulk, replaces approximately 80% of the capacity very quickly. Charger current is controlled and the battery voltage is allowed to rise until the battery reaches its absorption voltage.
The second stage, Absorption, replaces the remaining 20% capacity and charger voltage isheld steady while current is allowed to drop as the battery becomes full.
The third stage, in the Float stage, charger voltage is lowered and held constant at a safe predetermined value. This prevents the battery from being overcharged, yet allows the charger to supply enough current to make up for the self discharge.
An additional maintenance feature available
on our VMI chargers is Equalization. This
prevents flooded lead acid batteries from aging
prematurely and is not part of the routine
three-stage process. Equalization is user activated
after the battery has entered the Float
phase. In this state, the battery continues to
be charged with a small amount of current at a high voltage level. This forces the battery to its highest possible state of charge, and dissolves the crystals of lead sulphate that have collected.

Easy as 1 2 3
First, the Quality Marine charger's constant voltage output provides current necessary for meeting load requirements, while maintaining the battery at float voltage. Constant voltage charging prevents battery cycling and provides for years of extended battery life. This means hundreds of dollars worth of
savings down the road.
Second, charge voltage is manually adjustable on all Quality Marine chargers. This allows the user to adjust the Quality Marine charger to meet any charging objective e.g. rapid charging, periodic cell equalization, forming new batteries, and maintaining any type of battery at its proper float voltage.
Third, Quality Marine chargers tolerate extreme input variations, in line voltage or generator
frequency, and still do their job. Input variations are a fact of marine life and the ability to tolerate them
means protection of the customer's investment in both charger and batteries.
♦ Tightly regulated, 100% continuous load support up to the VMI model rating:
Whether loads are on or off, your batteries will not know you are aboard. Your VMI does all the work, all day, all night, at the voltage you set, even in the hottest engine rooms, and without the need of cooling fans.
♦ Easily set charging parameters:
Ensures large battery banks, whether thick plate, premium deep cycle batteries, AGM, or of any other type, are fully charged, properly maintained, and deliver maximum life.
♦ Delivery of an amperage pulse:
The pulse, 65% greater than what the RMS ammeter shows, accelerates re-charge time and helps keep your battery plates sulfate free.
♦ 4.5 to 140 hour time controlled equalize/recharge cycle:
The VMI is easily user configured to ensure batteries become fully charged no matter how large the battery bank. Time controlled equalization of healthy batteries can be performed at lower voltages across time, or manually, up to 2.75 volts per cell, to restore batteries.
♦ Proper float voltage:
Nothing improves battery life more than a properly set float voltage. VMI float voltage adjusts to any battery type to within 1/100th of a volt.
♦ Load and line variation compensation and isolation:
The surge damped ± .5% VMI output voltage regulator responds to 50% load changes in less than two seconds while the isolation transformer compensates for broad input voltage and frequency variations.
♦ Soft Start:
When the AC goes down and the batteries supporting the load become depleted, the VMI soft start eliminates DC spikes to sensitive electronics upon AC restoration.
♦ Failure alarm and remote monitoring:
Optional form C relays signal AC input or DC output failure. Switch between Equalize/Float and monitor EQ/FL status, output current, and voltage remotely.
♦ Acceptance by USCG, ABS, DNV, ABYC, UL 1500 (Ignition Protection) and UL 1236 (Drip Proof):
Built to meet requirements for installations aboard inspected vessels, barges, derricks, and more.
♦ Famous for reliability and durability, backed by a 3 year warrantee:
The Quality Marine VMI, formerly McCarron VMI and Ratelco VM, has proven over the last 30+ years that it is the best performing, most reliable, and longest lasting marine charger made.
♦ Significantly exceeds industry standards of performance:
Not only does the Quality Marine VMI far exceed industry standards of performance, it demonstrably out performs all other chargers in it's class.
